What Orangeburg pipe is
Orangeburg is the common name for bituminized fibre pipe, after Orangeburg, New York, where the Fiber Conduit Company — renamed the Orangeburg Manufacturing Company in 1948 — made most of it. It was built up from layers of ground wood pulp pressed together and impregnated with coal tar pitch; a trade account describes a 4-inch pipe as containing up to 25 layers. Some formulations also included asbestos fibres.
It was cheap, light and easy to cut and join, which made it attractive during the postwar housing boom when demand for building materials was enormous and cast iron was scarce. It was used for decades before and after, but the late 1940s through the early 1970s is when it went into sewer laterals by the million.
Plastic pipe made it obsolete. PVC and ABS arrived through the 1960s, the Orangeburg plant closed in 1972, and cities began prohibiting the material — Ann Arbor, Michigan, for example, approved it in 1949 and banned it in 1970. Countless miles of it are still in the ground.
How to tell if you have Orangeburg pipe
There's no reliable way to be certain without seeing the pipe, but three clues narrow it down quickly.
- Check the build year. A house built from the late 1940s to the early 1970s is in the Orangeburg window, and regional practice can stretch that at either end. Postwar subdivisions are the classic case.
- Look at any exposed pipe. At a cleanout, where the line leaves the foundation, or in a crawl space, Orangeburg is black or very dark brown, has a slightly soft, tarry or layered look, and has no seams or bell joints like clay. Tap it: it sounds dull rather than ringing like cast iron.

The fibre material absorbs moisture and softens. Under the weight of the soil above it, the round pipe slowly flattens into an oval. Its inner layers blister and delaminate — one city's guidance notes that the interior layers fail first and the pipe rots from the inside out. Joints separate as the ground moves, roots enter through the softened wall and joints, and eventually the pipe collapses.
Published lifespan estimates are around 30 to 50 years under good conditions, and it has been known to fail in as little as 10. Nearly every Orangeburg lateral still in service is past that window.
