Tree roots in the sewer line: how serious, and what actually fixes it

How roots get into a sewer line

Roots grow toward moisture and nutrients, and a sewer lateral leaks both. Warm, humid air escapes through any joint that isn't watertight, the soil around it stays damp, and a fine root follows that gradient to the gap and grows through it.

Once inside, the root is in the ideal environment — constant water, nutrients and oxygen — and it branches into a dense mat that catches paper and grease. The mat grows, the joint opens wider, and eventually the pressure can crack or displace the pipe.

That's why the pipe material matters so much. Clay sewer pipe comes in short lengths with a joint every two or three feet, and older joints were sealed with mortar or oakum that cracks with age. Orangeburg fibre pipe softens and splits. Cast iron joints were packed with oakum and lead. Modern PVC with glued or gasketed joints is far more resistant, and root intrusion into a sound PVC line is unusual.

Fast-growing, water-seeking trees are the usual culprits — willows, poplars, silver maples and similar species — but any tree near a leaking line will find it.

Do root killers work?

They kill roots, but they don't fix anything, and some are restricted for good reason.

Copper sulfate crystals, sold widely as sewer root killer, kill the roots they contact. They don't clear a blocked line, and copper passes through the sewer to the wastewater treatment plant, where it is toxic to the microbes that treat sewage and ends up in the plant's discharge and sludge. California's pesticide regulator banned copper sulfate for sewer root control across the San Francisco Bay Area in 1995, and many utilities discourage or prohibit it. It also harms the bacteria a septic system depends on.

Foaming root control products based on herbicides such as dichlobenil or metam sodium coat the pipe wall and slow regrowth for a period after the roots are cut. Some are sold to homeowners and some are for licensed applicators; municipal crews use them in public sewers. Used after mechanical cutting, they can stretch the time between cleanings.

The honest summary: root killers are a maintenance tool to use after roots are cut, following the label and your utility's rules. They do nothing about the joint that let the roots in.

A plumber clears roots with a sewer machine fitted with a cutting head, or with a hydro jetter using a root-cutting nozzle. Cutting typically costs $150 to $600 depending on access and severity.

How long it lasts depends on the tree, the season and how open the joints are. Some lines stay clear for years; aggressive trees at a wide joint can refill a pipe within a few months, usually in the growing season. Whose tree, whose bill?

In most places the owner of the sewer lateral is responsible for keeping it clear and repairing it, regardless of whose tree the roots came from. That includes a neighbor's tree and, in many cities, a street tree.

There are exceptions worth checking. Some cities take responsibility for damage caused by city-owned street trees, or for the part of the lateral under the public right of way; others run reimbursement programmes. Claims against a neighbor for root damage depend on state law and the circumstances, and aren't something to assume either way — this is a question for your city and, if the sums are large, a lawyer.
