Clay sewer pipe commonly lasts 50 to 100 years or more — the fired clay itself hardly wears. What clay sewer pipe is

Vitrified clay pipe is made from clay and shale fired in kilns at around 2,000°F into a hard, inert ceramic. It has carried sewage for thousands of years and was the standard material for residential laterals in the US through much of the twentieth century, until plastic took over through the 1970s.

It's genuinely good at the job in one respect: it resists chemical attack, including the sulfuric acid that sewer gases produce, far better than cast iron or concrete. That's why some cities still specify modern vitrified clay pipe for sewer mains today.

Its weakness is mechanical. Clay is brittle, heavy and came in short lengths — typically two or three feet — so an old lateral has a joint every couple of feet, and every joint is a potential failure point.

Why the joints fail before the pipe does

Old clay lines use a bell-and-spigot design: the plain end of one section slides into the flared bell of the next. On older installations the gap was sealed with cement mortar or a bituminous compound, which cracks and loosens with age and ground movement. Rubber gasket joints, which stay much tighter, came later.

An open joint leaks moisture and warm air into the soil, which draws roots to it. Once roots are inside, they widen the gap, and eventually push sections out of line. Freeze-thaw cycles and settling soil do the same thing more slowly, producing offsets, separations and bellies.
