Why the line gets deeper toward the street
Sewer lines run on gravity, so they have to fall the whole way. The International Plumbing Code requires horizontal drains and building sewers of 3 to 6 inches to slope at least 1/8 inch per foot, and many plumbers lay a 4-inch lateral at 1/4 inch per foot. Over a long run, that fall adds up.

Why depth matters for repairs
Depth is one of the biggest drivers of excavation cost. Deeper trenches take longer to dig, need shoring past about 5 feet, and take more backfill and compaction — in this site's cost model, a line deeper than 8 feet raises open-trench pipe work by about 35%. Pipe bursting pits get deeper too, while pipe lining is barely affected by depth at all.
Depth also matters for spotting frost problems in cold climates. A shallow line that freezes can crack, and a line laid too shallow under a driveway is more vulnerable to loads.
How to find where your sewer line runs
- Find the cleanout outside the foundation. The line usually continues from it toward the street in a fairly straight path.
- In a basement or crawl space, find where the main drain passes through the wall — that's the direction the lateral leaves.
- Look toward the street for a second cleanout near the property line, a sewer manhole in the road, or marks some cities stamp on the curb at each connection.
- Ask your city or sewer district for records. Many publish sewer maps or can share permit records and as-built drawings showing the connection point.
- Look at a neighbour's layout — houses built together were often plumbed the same way.
- For an exact path and depth, have a plumber run a camera with a transmitter (a sonde) through the line and trace it from above with a locator.
- Ground-penetrating radar services can find pipes when there's no access for a camera, including plastic and clay pipe that metal-detecting locators miss.
Will 811 mark my sewer line?
Usually not the part that's yours. When you call 811 before digging, utilities send locators to mark the lines they own — gas, electric, public water and sewer mains, communications — and those typically end at the meter or the property line. Your private sewer lateral is owned by you, so it generally isn't marked.
Private laterals are also hard to locate electronically because clay, PVC and Orangeburg don't conduct a signal. That's why plumbers use a camera sonde, and why you should still call 811 for everything else before digging near the line.
How to tell how deep your sewer line is
- At the cleanout: remove the cap and measure down the riser to the point where it tees into the horizontal pipe. That's the depth of the line at that spot.
- With a camera sonde: a plumber's locator reads the depth of the camera head at any point along the run.
- From records: permit drawings and as-builts sometimes note depths at the house and the connection.
- By estimate: start from the depth at the cleanout and add the fall — roughly 1/8 to 1/4 inch per foot — toward the street.
